Our Commission is working toward compensation parity, unified competencies, reciprocity, and practice autonomy for early childhood educators across states, systems, and programs.

“Each and every child, beginning at birth, has the opportunity to benefit from high-quality early childhood education, delivered by an effective, diverse, well-prepared, and well-compensated workforce across all states and settings.”

Unifying Framework for the Early Childhood Education Profession

The Impetus for the Commission on Professional Excellence in Early Childhood Education

In March 2020, the Power to the Profession Taskforce, a collaboration of 15 national early childhood education organizations, released the Unifying Framework for the Early Childhood Education Profession.

Through extensive engagement with the tens of thousands in the early childhood field, this consensus document presents a bold vision for the early childhood education profession and a roadmap for how educators, ECE employers, higher education, states and the federal government can realize this vision.

Fundamental to creating a well-supported ECE profession is putting the profession in charge of itself. Self-governance is a common feature in other professions but is not present in the early childhood education profession.

As such, the Unifying Framework called for the creation of a professional governance body to both hold the Unifying Framework and advance the implementation of the recommendations in the Unifying Framework.
